Let’s dive in with the experts to understand what a lip tint is, how to choose it correctly, apply it, and, of course, how to remove it.
What is Lip Tint
A lip tint is a highly pigmented product with a water-based formula. It absorbs into the lips and, in its classic form, doesn’t leave any texture behind. The pigment is rich, yet it appears natural on the lips due to the lack of thickness.
The key properties of a lip tint are its incredible durability and versatility. The main task of a lip tint is to reduce the need for constant touch-ups during the day, as it stays intact even after eating, drinking, or kissing. It’s especially handy when you’re headed to an event where frequent lip touch-ups aren’t necessary.
Anastasia Mirova, makeup artist and founder of Mirova Beauty Academy:
“There was this one bride I was getting ready, who had an allergy to any texture on her lips. But she so desperately wanted to look her best on the most important day, to shine with perfect makeup in front of her husband, guests, and cameras — and that’s when the lip tint came to our rescue. The pigmented liquid absorbed into her lips so quickly that her body didn’t have time to react. We achieved beautifully lush lips with no aftermath.”
Thanks to its multifunctionality, a lip tint can replace several products at once. If you’re packing light for a trip, the tint can double as blush and eyeshadow. It’s perfect for any makeup look — from casual to evening.
Anastasia Mirova adds: “The color on the cheeks and eyes will last throughout the day. You can even create a stylish monochrome look. But you need to be careful: the tint can sometimes be difficult to blend and may leave blotches.”
Unlike matte lipstick, a tint is barely noticeable on the lips, leaving only the pigment, while matte lipstick can often dry and tighten the lips. When compared to moisturizing glossy lipstick, the main advantage of a tint is its longevity.
Olga Shilova, beauty stylist:
“The benefits of a lip tint are its economy and longevity: it lasts a long time, so you won’t need to reapply it often. You can layer it to achieve a more intense color, and it stays put for hours. However, there’s a downside: the tint can quickly soak into makeup brushes — if the bristles were light, it can be hard to clean them.”
Types of Lip Tints
Liquid
The most common type, with a lightweight watery texture. It absorbs quickly, leaving behind a long-lasting pigment. It’s suitable for creating both light and more intense shades, depending on how many layers you apply.
Gel
This has a thicker, gel-like consistency that spreads evenly over the lips. It typically provides a brighter and more saturated color than liquid tints.
Cream
With a creamy texture, this type is easy to apply and blend. It can be used not only on the lips but also on the cheeks as blush or on the eyes as eyeshadow. It gives a denser coverage compared to liquid or gel tints.
Balm
A hybrid of a lip tint and a nourishing lip balm. It provides a light tint while simultaneously moisturizing and nourishing the lips. Ideal for everyday use, especially for those with dry lips.
Film
A liquid tint that dries and forms a thin film over the lips. Once removed, it leaves behind a bright, long-lasting pigment. This type of tint provides exceptional longevity, but it can slightly dry out the lips.
Olga Shilova explains:
“Tints can be water-based or cream-based, and both typically finish with a matte look. The water-based tint dries very quickly, and it’s convenient to apply with an applicator directly from the tube. A cream-based tint can be used not only on the lips but also on the cheeks and eyelids, allowing you to create a monochromatic makeup look with one product. Apply it with a synthetic brush on the face, and with your fingers on the lips.”
How to Choose a Lip Tint
“When selecting a lip tint, it’s important to pay attention to the texture. The thicker the texture, the more intense the color will be, and the easier it will be to blend if necessary,” advises Anastasia Mirova. “One rule of thumb is to ensure the lip tint shade matches your blush color. Pick a tint that complements your overall makeup look. Everything else is just basic advice, and makeup is about creativity. The shade can be completely different depending on your mood, outfit, or event.”
Olga Shilova recommends: “For an evening, dramatic makeup, I would go for a tint like the Christian Dior Addict Lip Tattoo, which is perfect for a social event. But if you apply it with your fingers, avoiding a sharp contour, it’s great for a day-to-day look. The Saem Saemmul Mousse Candy Tint is perfect for a daytime look with a focus on the lips. It gives a dense coverage with a matte, yet natural finish.”
How to Apply Lip Tint Correctly
1. Moisturize Your Skin
It’s essential to hydrate your lips before applying a tint. Since tints can dry out the lips, it’s best to exfoliate or use a hydrating lip mask to prepare them.
2. Apply the Tint
You only need a small amount since the product is highly pigmented. The best way to apply it is with your fingertip, which helps warm the product and gives a smoother, more even finish. For soufflé tints, you can use the applicator to create a neat outline.
Anastasia Mirova reminds: “Never apply a tint to dry, chapped lips — it will emphasize cracks and unevenness. The tint dries fast, so you need to apply it quickly. The more liquid the formula, the faster it absorbs, and the color can become patchy in seconds.”
How to Remove Lip Tint
Olga Shilova points out a significant drawback of lip tints compared to lipsticks — they are harder to remove and require a makeup remover. “Sometimes, girls try to wipe off the tint with a tissue, which can damage the lips. It’s important to use a special two-phase makeup remover, apply it to a cotton pad, wait a few seconds, and then gently remove the tint. Afterward, use a cleansing gel or foam. Finally, moisturize your lips. Applying a thick layer of lip balm or ointment overnight is a great idea.”
Anastasia Mirova also recommends using quality micellar water or a two-phase makeup remover. After removing the tint, always cleanse your face with a gentle cleanser. Don’t forget to moisturize and nourish your lips with a special night mask, oil, or balm.
