We’re accustomed to seeing models glowing under the spotlight—flawless features, porcelain skin, every detail perfectly in place. But the true enchantment happens off the runway, in the calm moments beyond the spotlight. This is the essence of the “Model Off Duty” look—effortlessly chic, like you’ve just stepped out for a coffee but still exude the radiance of a Vogue cover. Subtle, fresh, alive.
How do they manage to appear so effortlessly stunning, yet utterly flawless? We consulted makeup artist Mariana Zivanovich, who’s worked backstage at numerous fashion shows in New York, to reveal how to recreate this look at home.
1. Radiance Is Your Most Powerful Ally
“Model Off Duty makeup is all about glowing, hydrated skin, as if you’ve just woken up from the most perfect slumber,” says Zivanovich. And it all begins with skincare.
Essence, serum, a light moisturizer, and SPF—this is your essential ritual. Want a touch of evenness in your complexion? Opt for a tinted moisturizer. The key is to enhance, not conceal, your skin’s natural radiance.
2. Concealer—Keep It Minimal
Models seem to wear no makeup at all, but that’s just an illusion. It’s all about precision and light-handed application. “Just a dab of concealer on areas of redness, under the eyes, and that’s it. No thick textures or mask-like effects,” the expert shares. Ditch the heavy foundations. The more natural your skin looks, the closer you are to mastering this aesthetic.
3. Stick to Cream Textures
Forget about powders. For that warm, dewy finish, only use cream-based products—highlighters, blushes, even eyeshadows.
Apply them with your fingertips to achieve that soft, seamless blend that mimics skin rather than makeup. “I love applying highlighter to the corners of the eyes, on the cheekbones, and a bit on the eyelids—and voilà, you’re glowing,” says Mariana.
4. Define Lashes Without Overloading
Models always appear bright-eyed, even after a sleepless night. The secret? A gentle lash curl. Sometimes, mascara isn’t even necessary.
If you must, use a lightweight, almost invisible mascara—no clumps. Too much, and your eyes will droop. If you’ve over-applied, simply swipe over your lashes with your finger or a cotton swab to remove excess.
5. Eyebrows: Embrace Natural Elegance
Say goodbye to harshly sculpted arches. Focus on volume and effortless texture. Brush your brows with a gel to shape them, and only lightly define them with a pencil if needed.
The gel should set without leaving any visible residue or film. Everything should feel organic, as though you’ve just woken up with perfect brows.
6. A Soft Tint for Your Lips
No bold lipsticks or matte finishes. Stick to a delicate tint, balm, or lip oil. “The goal is for your lips to look hydrated, cared for, and with a subtle flush,” reveals Zivanovich.
You can even use the same product on your lips and cheeks for a harmonious, uncomplicated look. This creates the impression that you’re almost makeup-free, yet undeniably alluring.
7. Subtle Liner for Definition
If you want a little extra definition, don’t rush for eyeshadows. A brown pencil is your best friend. Draw it along the lash line, then smudge with your finger or a brush.
This will add depth to your eyes without disrupting the overall softness of your look. Everything should feel light, effortless—just as it should in the makeup of a model off the catwalk.
And remember, this look isn’t about rigid rules or techniques. It’s about the feeling of freedom, about how you look in the mirror and feel stunning without any effort.
You’re not “trying” to look perfect. You already look fabulous—simply because it’s you.
